"A Forgotten Tradition: May Basket Day", Linton Weeks, NPR
While it had nothing to do with Beltane (faulty 19th century scholarship), May Baskets were made in more traditional/rural areas of the U.S., until the 1980's. Namely, the South, the North-East and the Midwest. I remember making a few in the late 70's, as a child. Especially, with paper 'tissue' flowers held together with pipe-cleaners, these were also 'Mother's Day gifts'.
If you were really 'posh', supposedly you delivered baskets made of pressed white or yellow lace. These could be 'stiffened' with 'Elmer's glue' or starch...
